Growing up in a Punjabi culture and Sikh household, while being born in America, I was unable to represent my identity. This experience led me to create art and express myself, as there was limited representation of Punjabi and Sikh art throughout my life. Growing up with a very close relationship with my cousins and sister, I steered myself to produce art that represented a memory, while tying it in with my identity, culture, and religion. The memory of mine made me realize that I wanted to use my art skills to develop pieces that gave representation to the Punjabi culture and Sikh religion, while highlighting the importance of sisterhood. My discovery of different topics that portray my identity has led me to create unique and collaborative pieces, allowing others to be educated through it and displaying a bit of my memories and symbols that are important to me. This piece gave me the power to explore and use multiple different mediums, such as oil paint and embroidery to create a meaningful and connected piece. This artwork of mine shows the importance of my culture, religion, and family, leading me to accept who I am while having a passion and love for art.
