“How This Butterfly Got Her Wings” is a painting and book that represents my cancer survivor story. My name is Brianna Garcia and I am a Leukemia cancer survivor. I was diagnosed so young that having cancer became a part of me, a part that I barely shared. It would be an understatement to say I’m not proud of my struggles, but I am mostly proud and blessed for everyone around me who helped me through them. It’s not something I hide but it’s not something I wanted to be known for growing up. I grew up with some challenges because of it and didn’t want others to feel sorry. I wanted people, especially kids while growing up to approach me, not my illness. Now as I’m about to graduate College, I look back and see how far I’ve come. I fought Memory Disorder and the worst side effect so far, was a brain tumor. Through it all, I grew up feeling so happy, with so many friends and opportunities that I was never denied. Now closing a chapter of my life and entering “adulthood’, I want to conclude my College years, by sharing some of who I am and what I went through to get here. What better way, than through my passion…which is art!
