Jessie's Room
This is Jessie's Room. A place where dreams can become reality. Jessie is a 12 year-old hockey player. When she first started playing, there was no place to see herself represented on a professional level, as once a female hockey player passed the college level, there was not a higher league to achieve in the sport. This changed in 2023 with the introduction of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL). Now Jessie can imagine and dream of striving to achieve higher and bigger dreams, seeing herself represented in the same world that boys have had with the National Hockey League (NHL). For too long, women have been marginalized and underrepresented in the realm of professional sports, their aspirations restrained by societal expectations and systemic barriers. However, the emergence of leagues like the PWHL is changing the narrative, offering young female hockey players a glimpse into a future where their dreams can not only be realized but celebrated. As an artist, I am inspired by the stories of these young athletes-their passion, their dedication, and their unyielding spirit. Through my work, I seek to amplify their voices and shine a spotlight on the profound impact that the PWHL is having on the representation of women in sports. By capturing the essence of their journey - the triumphs, the setbacks, and the moments of sheer joy—I hope to inspire others to dream boldly and to believe that anything is possible. So, As we look towards the future of women in sport, we can think of the girls like Jessie. She embodies who this league is aiming to inspire. So as you enter Jessie's room, I hope you feel her spirit, and see how the PWHL is impacting a younger generation of female athletes.
