The Berg: Uncovering the Black History of Alexandria, Virginia
Medium: Print and Graffiti
“The Berg” is a vibrant affirmation of the enduring spirit of Northern Alexandria's oldest, historically Black neighborhood. This two-part installation is a reclamation of space and a celebration of the community, resilience, and ingenuity that defined "The Berg." The project consists of three 24 x 36” posters highlighting former community spaces layered against three acrylic panels with graffiti of the current buildings taking up space in the area. The physical gap between the poster and the acrylic panel symbolizes the loss of generational history created by displacement and the visual distance that now separates current residents from the area's rich past.
