Miyazaki, Sasaki, and Uchi
Medium: Acrylic Sheets, Photographs
Miyazaki, Sasaki, and Uchi is a multidisciplinary work of sculptural installation and photographs exploring physical space and memory. The artist’s grandfather, Sadahiro Sasaki, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and has recently moved out of his house to a nursing home. The original house, which the piece models and where Sadahiro resided, was built by Sadahiro, who worked as a construction/architect manager for many years, and where the artist herself also spent time with her grandparents. The piece memorializes losing access to the physical space, Uchi, and encourages viewers to examine memory in relation to the physical space.
The piece, made from clear acrylic sheets, mimic the process of fading memory. The semi-transparent pictures within the piece represent the time the artist and her grandfather spent in the house.
Uchi* is a Japanese word for “inside”, “home”, or “us”.
