Visuals of Poodles

Medium: Physical and Digital Media

My name is Kate, I am a George Mason University student pursuing a degree in Graphic Design. My project, Visuals of Poodles, combines physical and digital media, including a book, a video of model dog grooming, a model dog, and a poster of Poodle grooming anatomy. My photographs with Poodles are also presented alongside the exhibition description.

The theme of the exhibition is the Poodle breed—its grooming features, history of origin, breed characteristics, and Doodles (designer Poodle mixes). This exhibition has a personal meaning for me, as I have owned this breed since around the age of twelve. When I moved from Russia to the United States, I left my first dog with my aunt. Since then, I have worked as a dog bather, later trained as a dog groomer, and now own a second Standard Poodle.

For me, this exhibition is an opportunity to share the history of this ancient breed and challenge stereotypes, especially as designer mixes have become more popular than the original breed. My research into Poodle hairstyles and breed history helped shape the vision for this project.
