Frayed

Medium: Watercolor & Acrylic on Watercolor Paper

Frayed is a fighting zebra who’s unraveling stripes are wrapping around her.

I find that I struggle with understanding who I am in a world where it often feels like everyone else already knows. As an artist, I am constantly trying to figure out my style. I’m always asking myself if I am even good enough.

Zebras have become such a interesting symbol for me. When they are viewed from far away, they appear the same within their herd. A single entity. No differences, just one glob of stripes. But if you single them out–each is so different. Like fingerprints, no striped equine is the same.

With Frayed, the zebra’s twisted stripes represent that feeling of being caught in your own thoughts, expectations, or insecurities. I want viewers to think about how everyone has their own “fingerprint” of experiences and challenges that aren’t always visible from far away.
