Time on Their Faces

Medium: Graphite and Charcoal

Time on Their Faces consists of multiple portraits of my parents, depicting every year I have known them. Spanning from my birth in 2004 to the present, 2026, the portraits are arranged chronologically, and the drawings reveal a subtle yet progression of changes. As time passes, small shifts in expression, facial structure, and presence can be revealed and seen.

Created using graphite and charcoal, these portraits delve into the idea of memory. Both materials can be easily altered or erased, reflecting how recollection can soften, distort, and evolve the physical self over time. Using these two mediums evokes the idea that nothing can really stay exactly as it once was, even if changes cannot be seen. The works are installed vertically, which towers over the viewer, requiring them to move to see the upper drawings. This spatial relationship creates distance and perspective, expressing the dynamic between my parents and myself. The piece acts upon remembrance, emphasizing not only how my parents have changed, but how I have continued to see them.
